Intern, Quantum Solutions Machine Learning

Company: PsiQuantum
Location: Palo Alto
Posted on: May 8, 2024

Job Description:

PsiQuantum is on a mission to build the world's first fault tolerant quantum computer capable of tackling today's most intractable computational challenges to deliver transformative results. - - - We know that means it will need roughly 1 million qubits and will be building scale in size. -
Quantum computing is expected to deliver breakthroughs for today's still impossible computational tasks. By harnessing the laws of quantum physics, quantum computers can provide exponential performance increases over even the most powerful of today's conventional supercomputers offering the potential for extraordinary advances across a broad range of applications including climate, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials design, and many more. -
PsiQuantum is uniquely positioned to deliver on the promise of quantum computing. Our architecture is based on photonics which gives us the ability to produce our components using high-volume semiconductor manufacturing processes, the same processes that have been applied in telecommunications and data center applications for decades. - Since photons don't feel heat, we can take advantage of existing cryogenic cooling systems, the kind that have been operating at facilities like Stanford Linear Accelerator (SLAC) since 2018. - And because photons are basically light, they can move between subsystems using standard fiber connectivity, without the need for transduction in and out. -
Our team is working across the full stack of quantum computing, from quantum architecture to photonic chip manufacturing, advanced opto-electronic packaging, hardware systems design, quantum algorithms and software tools, and cryogenic cooling. - - We're a highly motivated and collaborative group focused on a singular goal - building the world's first Fault Tolerant Quantum Computer on the fastest path possible. -
There's more work to be done and we are looking for exceptional talent to join us on this extraordinary journey! -
Job Summary:
Thinking of combining your vast machine learning expertise with real-world physics and chemistry problems that can be used to facilitate building more efficient energy materials, green chemistry solutions, and tackle challenges related to climate change? In this role you will use your machine learning expertise to create solutions in materials informatics, working in a cross-disciplinary team and learning more about important topics in condensed matter physics and computational physics and chemistry. As a Quantum Solutions Machine Learning Intern, you will be working with a group of computational materials physicists/chemists, quantum information scientists, as well as materials informatics experts to create machine learning models that can connect micro-observables and molecular/atomistic fingerprints generated by quantum computers to materials discovery pipelines and help develop better energy materials. You will be a source of knowledge for technical aspects of a wide range of machine learning methodologies, and participate in group problem solving with computational physicists/chemists and quantum information scientists.
This role will be ideal for a PhD candidate in computer science (or related field) in their last year of graduate studies who has had some exposure to physics and chemistry topics (e.g., through college-level courses). Alternatively, a physics, chemistry or materials science PhD candidate in their last year of graduate studies who has spent the majority of their time on building machine learning models, and not only can use specific machine learning models, but also understands them in a deep fundamental level. A curious creative thinker with a bird's eye view over a vast array of machine learning algorithms, with experience in enhancing some of these algorithms, or applying them to various large and small datasets. For computer science students, previous knowledge of quantum physics and chemistry, or quantum information is a plus, but not required. Only passion to learn about them as much as needed.
Responsibilities:

  • Conduct cutting-edge research, literature analysis, problem solving, and workflow design in the area of materials informatics.
  • Act a source of knowledge for deep technical aspects of a wide range of machine learning models.
  • Work with machine learning experts, other computational materials scientists, and quantum information experts to create quantum-based materials informatics solutions.
  • Contribute to collaborative software/research projects.
  • Write organized weekly internal reports and progress documentation.

    Experience/Qualifications:

    • Currently a Ph.D. candidate in computer science or highly related field. Alternatively, a Ph.D. candidate in physics, chemistry, materials science, or highly related field with a demonstrated history of deep technical knowledge and published papers utilizing, modifying, or proposing. advanced machine learning models.
    • Experience with active learning, deep learning, graph neural networks, transformers, and LLMs.
    • Experience with Gaussian Processes and knowledge of Bayesian Inference.
    • Experience in working with both big and small datasets.
    • Experience with generative AI.
    • Knowledge of basics of chemistry, physics, and materials science.
    • We are open to consider candidates whose resumes do not have all of the listed keywords but have shown great academic performance and evidence of highly-creative problem solving in a subset of these topics.
    • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative, cross-disciplinary and dynamic quantum startup.
